Bodega / Wine House - La Palma / Canary Islands

(2016)

getting there:

Following a line of curvy roads that are directed and designed by the geographical facts of a magical nature and landscape that runs through the hills, the property opens up in a quiet and spacious place located on the island of La Palma.
The bigger part of the property is guided by natural facts such as terraces holding the different levels, growing plants and fruit and hosting two small houses and constructed components for joy and rest. Seeking for balance between the people living and visiting the place, a personal collection of artworks that are installed throughout the different levels and the given nature that is always present and unpredictable. All interacts with one another whether there are people around or just the quiet days and nights are present. Always covered by a natural quietness and magical atmosphere.

Following the steps through the upper levels, directed to the the distant open sea, leads to the properties lower level that serves its main grounds to wine and avocado plants. Surrounded by the agriculture and its needs there is an open space to meet and be together in a little less private setting. Constructed with materials and in style of the island there are a pergola on one side and a small bodega on the other. Still remaining personal and in balance with its surrounding this area is a place to meet and spend some time together - a place to let things grow and enjoy the yield - a place for reflection, moods and memories that are inspired by its surrounding and details.

the bodega / wine house:

It can be private, it can work for two people, it can work for a family, and it can work for a group and large parties. It’s probably what can be called the properties most public private space.

The most dominant part for people that will come in is probably the movement that happens. The lines take them through a progression of coming in through the kitchen that opens up into a living space that opens up to the open sea.

Following the part of ‘getting there’, the aim is to combine natural with artificial lines that will express in a fluid composition of directions, levels, functions and intuitions. The curves and levels that dominates the islands human mobility together with its natural given earth coloured patterns and unpredictable energies serve as an inspiration to create a movement that should interact with its guests and that is meant for unique moments and timelessness. Like a continuation of unconscious perception it should create, in a calm and natural way, a state of excitement, a sensitive response to its aesthetic dimension.

materials and details:

Materials are chosen to support a certain feeling when entering and becoming acquainted with the space. Whether experiencing the space inside or just throwing a look from the outside, a distinct feeling shall arise. Without being able to define it, it may be a rewarming and distancing one, a familiar still intriguing feeling.

The materials and details are organized after mental activities rather than only functions. Hence, they create the appropriate environment to expressively stage different moods and motivations.
